In this activity, students will analyze U.S. holiday candy sales percentage data (updated) to calculate the approximate amount spent on candy for each holiday. Students are encouraged to work without a calculator to strengthen their fluency with multiplying multi-digit whole numbers & decimals using the standard algorithm. They will also reflect on the efficiency of their calculating strategies and think critically about consumer behavior, marketing, and pricing.
