## Happy Birthday Statue of Liberty

Friday is the Statue of Liberty's 125th birthday. Student's can practice scaling with ratios, multiplication factors, or similar figures as they engage in the news of the day, learn a little about the statue's history, see some amazing old photos and even decipher a few Roman numerals.

## Approaching Seven Billion people

During the Fall 2011 the 7 billionth human on earth was born. The counter mentioned above gives updated approximations of the current world population. When will we hit 8 billion people? Students look at the number 7 billion, try to grasp its enormity with some comparisons, check out population, calculate some population density, work again with percents and have some fun thinking about our globe and where we live.

## Occupy Wall Street protest is growing

The Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement has grown since it began on September 17th. Students can look at charts that show percent mentions of the demonstrations and calculate the percentage of media mentions, percentage of comment growth, and the percentages of American wealth. Again Twitter was the prime discussion vehicle.

## QR codes ???

Your students have probably seen these images around and might not know why they are becoming popular for smart phone scanning ... and possibly dangerous. Students figure out the number of permutations of symbols that are possible with these 2-d scanning codes and compare that capability to the capacity of ordinary UPC barcodes. This activity might open student's eyes to some of the marketing that surrounds them and help them become aware of some possible dangers … all while engaging in mathematics.

"Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."... Apple CEO Tim Cook in a memo to Apple employees.

Students can honor Steve Jobs and be involved in an activity that allows them to talk about him and his accomplishments while devising a scaled time line of his life.
