## Mardi Gras, 2022

Tuesday, March 1, 2022, will be the day before Ash Wednesday and the start of the season of Lent.  Mardi Gras is a last hoorah and is celebrated throughout the world with feasting, partying, and general indulgence. In New Orleans revelers throw and collect purple, green, and gold beads.

Students get a chance to examine the monetary and environmental cost of this bead exuberance with our unit pricing and recycling activity.

## Winter Olympic Activities (7 activities)

Curling - Friction, score-keeping, trajectory and weirdness are the main concepts in this activity.  Curling is not a well-understood sport but the science and strategy are easily understood and enjoyed.

Big Air Snowboarding - Some of your students may be officianados of snowboarding. Using this activity could be an opportunity to let those students shine.  We look at the orientation of regular and goofy snowboarders and how their tricks are described in rotation direction and degrees.

Sweetheart candies are back - NECCO went bankrupt in 2018 and there weren't Sweetheart candies the next year.  But they are back now and made in Ohio instead of Massachusetts. Where have all the flowers gone come from? - Sunday, February 14, 2021, is Valentine's Day.  Start the "love hoopla" with this graphic (from visual.ly) about where all of those flowers come from. What fraction of these roses are shaded red?  The red ones symbolize flowers that come from Columbia or Ecuador.  What fact is this graphic of roses demonstrating?  What other ways could they have shown that fact? 4.OA, 4.NF, 5.NF, 6.RP.3, 7.RP
