John Urschel, retired Baltimore Raven and Black mathematician

John Urschel is a young man with several seemingly disparate characteristics and talents.  He is an athlete and a mathematician and he is a black man and a mathematician.  He loves what he does and he is good at it all.

In this activity, students can learn about this mathematician and retired pro football player as they read to create a timeline of his life and accomplishments.  They compare his milestone to  the milestones that are usually met in schools.

At least the days are getting longer

What's your guess?  How fast are the number of daylight hours changing each day?  Are the changes dramatic or subtle?

Students make guesses; compute how long, on average, the change in daylight hours should be; and finally understand the variability in our year of daylight hours.

How should I spend my rewards?

There's a new way to earn rewards at many grocery stores.  For every dollar that you spend, you accumulate points.  Then there are special rewards where you earn an extra 500 points for buying a certain product.  Rewards can mount up fast.

Finally you have to decide how to spend your rewards.  You can cash them in for savings on groceries, apply them to your gasoline purchases, or even use them to give to a food kitchen.

Many people will choose to give the value of their rewards to charity.  But, if you are going to use them for gasoline or groceries, which way gets you the best deal?

11 Valentine & 2 President’s Day activities

Sweetheart candies are back - NECCO went bankrupt in 2018 and there weren't Sweetheart candies the next year.  But they are back now and made in Ohio instead of Massachusetts. How many dollars worth of sweetheart candies used to be sold each Valentine's season? Students practice problem solving, critical thinking, and number sense reasoning? 6.RP, 7.RP, N-Q

Where have all the flowers gone come from? - Sunday, February 14, 2021, is Valentine's Day.  Start the "love hoopla" with this graphic (from visual.ly) about where all of those flowers come from. What fraction of these roses are shaded red?  The red ones symbolize flowers that come from Columbia or Ecuador.  What fact is this graphic of roses demonstrating?  What other ways could they have shown that fact? 4.OA, 4.NF, 5.NF, 6.RP.3, 7.RP

Lunar New Year 2021 – Year of the Ox

Year of the Metal Ox

Celebrated by 1/4th of the world's population, Lunar New Year begins on Friday, February 12th. This will be the year of the Metal Ox.  The year's name is a combination of 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches creating a sequence of year names that eventually repeat.

Students explore the least common multiple of these two cycles without ever hearing the term LCM.  They explore some of Asian culture and begin to understand the major significance of this annual event, while they “do the math”.
